6 ways to avoid an audit

Minimize your chances of a follow-up from the IRS

From MarketWatch

While the government has cracked down in recent years on wealthy Americans stashing millions in offshore accounts, tax pros say it isn’t just the high rollers who might merit a double take from the IRS.

The total number of audits conducted over the mail for people earning more than $200,000 increased by 13% in 2012 from the year before, to 109,318, according to the IRS. Some taxpayers can get flagged for an audit if they make mistakes that cause the agency to question whether they’re reporting all of their income — from forgetting to report even small amounts of income to paying taxes for your babysitter.

To be sure, you can typically stay in the clear if you report your income honestly and maintain proper documentation, tax pros say. And overall, the probability of being audited is still low — the IRS audited less than 1% of taxpayers last year. Still, there are a few steps taxpayers can take to help keep their chances to a bare minimum. — By Jonnelle Marte

How a Family of Four Manages to Live Well on Just $14,000 Per Year

By Mandi Woodruff | Business Insider

In the years since the recession, the median household income in the U.S. has dropped to just over $50,000, while fixed costs like health care, higher education, and housing have only soared. Now imagine trying to support a family of four on a fraction of that income.

It's a reality that stay-at-home wife and mother of two Danielle Wagasky has lived for the last four years. And, perhaps a little surprisingly, she wouldn't have it any other way.

Wagasky, 28, lives with her her husband, Jason, 31, and their two young children in a three-bedroom family home in Las Vegas, Nevada. While Jason, a member of the U.S. Army, completes his undergraduate studies, the family's only source of income is the $14,000 annual cost of living allowance he receives under the G.I. Bill. Despite all odds, the family has barely any credit card debt, no car payment, and no mortgage to speak of.

Wagasky has been sharing her journey to living meaningfully and frugally on her blog, Blissful and Domestic, since 2009.

The Love Story of You and Your Money

From Dave Ramsey.com

Whether you find yourself with no date, stuck on a blind date, or dating every single day, it’s time to DTBR—define the budget relationship.

Holidays like Valentine’s Day—full of hearts and roses and dizzying amounts of the color pink—make denying your relationship status almost impossible

Sure, in the past you’ve tiptoed around the labels. But you’ve been playing games for far too long. If you really want things between you and your money to be gushingly hunky-dory, you’ve got to take it to the next level.

It’s time to DTBR—define the budget relationship. Whether you find yourself with no date, stuck on a blind date, or dating every single day, you can use our guide below to get the conversation started.

No Date

When friends ask what you’re up to tonight, you respond with a coughing mumble. Your lack of financial plans might sound depressing to some, but the truth is you don’t need ’em! You’re fine all by yourself, thank you very much.

Just last week, you bought a brand-new pair of shoes because you wanted to. You don’t have to consult a budget. You’re free to spend as you please, without the ol’ ball and chain dragging you down.

Unfortunately, you and God’s ways of handling money need each other. A healthy relationship with money will challenge you to grow. Even better? Your money will grow too.

First Person: I Had No Savings at 40, but I Retired by 60

By | Yahoo! Contributor Network – Thu, Feb 7, 2013

I was living in Los Angeles. Had a great job at 40 and was not putting one penny away in savings. I was spending money faster than I was making it, living the single life. I knew every bar and restaurant along Hollywood Boulevard, and bartenders and waitresses knew me by name.

Now I'm living a comfortable retirement. What turned me around?

Reality. I noticed my co-workers and friends moving on with their lives. While I was stuck in a small apartment, they were getting married, buying homes and establishing a life beyond the nightclub. I knew I had to get serious and start saving.

I tore up all of my 13 credit cards

At the time I owed over $30,000 in credit card bills and my interest was over 19% on each card. Each card had a limit of $10,000. I cut them all up and started using a debit card.

I got on a budget

I created a budget. I paid off several cards in two years and reduced my expenses and saved over $900 a month. My income was $40,000 a year I was 40 which was a net of around $2,500 month. However, I charged everything. When I tore up my credit cards I put myself on strict budget: rent $440 per month, car note $275, and credit card $400 a month. I took all the extra cash and paid off my lowest balance credit card first, then second. I also put over 20% of my gross into the 401(k) and profit sharing programs and stock options at work.

5 overlooked tax breaks for small businesses

Commentary: Congress extended and expanded several key deductions

By Bill Bischoff/MarketWatch

Last month’s fiscal-cliff legislation included lots of tax provisions. Media attention has focused heavily on changes that affect individuals. But the new law also provides some valuable tax-saving breaks for businesses. Here’s the most important stuff to know for your outfit’s 2013 tax year.

Generous Depreciation Deductions for New and Used Assets

The Section 179 depreciation deduction privilege allows eligible businesses to deduct 100% of the cost of qualifying new and used assets in Year 1. For qualifying assets placed in service (set up and ready for business use) in tax years beginning in 2013, the fiscal-cliff legislation set the maximum Section 179 deduction at $500,000 (same as for 2010-2012). Without this change, the Section 179 maximum deduction for 2013 would have been only $25,000.

Budgeting by the Month: February

Common (and not-so-common) February money gotchas that may getcha if you’re not careful

From Dave Ramsey.com

There is no month like February.

We don’t mean that in a romantic, it’s-the-month-of-Valentine’s-Day-so-everyone-tells-you-that-you-must-spend-a-bunch-of-money-to-convince-your-man-or-woman-that-you-love-him-or-her way. We mean that to say that February, like any other month, is unique. It has its own expenses. And since we only see February once a year, you may forget some of the costs that come up during the month of Cupid. That’s where we come in.

Here are some common (and not-so-common) February money gotchas that may getcha if you’re not careful:
  • Winter clothes going on sale. Everyone loves a bargain, right? Discounts and clearances happen a lot this time of year, so if you budget for clothes that are going out of season, you can score some big buys.
  • Hiring a tax accountant. You may elect to do your taxes yourself, which means the only thing you’ll pay for is the software you use. However you choose to prepare your taxes, at least know that you’re going to spend some money on it.
  • Higher utility bills. It’s not surprising to see snow falling in February. Remember that when the temperature drops, your heating bill rises. Be ready to pay more by putting it into your budget.

Phil's Personal Finance Tip of the Day:

Career advice from the masters

By Harvey Mackay

Napoleon Hill, one of my favorite authors, devoted twenty years of his life to study what made people successful.  His mentor, steel magnate Andrew Carnegie, helped Hill by giving him introductions to some of the most successful people in business, including Henry Ford, Theodore Roosevelt, Charles Schwab, George Eastman, John D. Rockefeller, Thomas Edison, Clarence Darrow and many others.

What Hill discovered is that all these individuals realized the importance of surrounding themselves with people smarter than themselves.

I couldn’t agree more.  All of us together are a lot smarter than any one of us.  Which leads to some of the best career advice I can give you:  Networking is a skill you must develop.

If I had to name the single characteristic shared by all the truly successful people I’ve met over a lifetime, I’d say it is the ability to create and nurture a network of contacts.  A network replaces the weakness of the individual with the strength of your network.  You don’t have to know everything as long as you know the people who do.

A network can enrich your life.  It can help you help others.  A network improves your job security.  If you build a network, you will have a bridge to wherever you want to go.  So if you are ever up the proverbial creek, if you have a network, you always have a paddle.

Just remember, the more you exercise your networking muscles, the stronger they get and the easier networking becomes.

What other career advice can you benefit from?
